We all have habits we know are not good for us. Smoking, for one, is a habit that clearly harms our health. But there can be other, less obvious things that can be unhealthy when we practice them too much. Let’s take a look at the unhealthy habits you should cut out.
Go to bed late
If you have to be up early in the morning, you, sadly, do need to go to bed earlier. Staying up late every day or most days can lead to you not getting enough sleep, which is one of the worst things you can do to your body.
But beyond this, if you stay up late and go to sleep after midnight or closer to dawn, it can mess up with your natural cycles and also lead to you getting less rest than an early bedtime. While occasionally you might have things to do or fun to enjoy, it’s a great idea for your health to cultivate the habit of hitting the hay sooner rather than later.
Adding sugar to your diet
Nearly every packaged product has added sugar in it. If you check the packaging, you will see it’s true, even things like bread have additional sugar content. Plus, you probably have sweets and cookies or sodas, which have a lot of sugar.
Now, some level of sugar is needed, but research suggests that people today eat a lot of it, much more than the recommended amount. It’s better to try and reduce the habit of adding sugar or making things sweeter, for instance, adding sugar to coffee or tea, ordering a sweet drink over something like water, and more. Adding sugar can be a bad habit.
Keeping the windows closed
A stuffy room is not good for us. Some people might feel worried about sickness if it gets drafty, but being sealed off is not a great solution. When there is not enough air flow, we might get sluggish and hurt our health, as there is too much carbon monoxide.
Instead, a good idea is to ventilate all rooms, especially where we will be spending a lot of time. Even during a colder time, open windows with a warm blanket seem to be better for our health than a room with less oxygen.
Using a reusable water bottle (without proper hygiene)
Drinking enough water is absolutely good for you, and a reusable bottle is a good idea for the environment. But if you never wash, clean, or change your water bottle, you might be putting yourself at risk for nasty things.
Even if it’s just water, there can still be a build-up of bacteria, which is not great for your health. You need to clean it frequently, using the right cleaner, and make sure to change it every once in a while, especially if you have one made of plastic and not steel or glass. Plastic seems to be more risky in this regard, although it can certainly be lighter.
Excluding a big category of food or eating the same things
Many diets encourage you to cut down on carbs or fats or maybe exclude specific categories of meals outright. Unless this is recommended by a doctor, you should think twice about this. While some foods might be seen as better, our body needs a lot of variety to function.
Your diet needs to include a bit of everything, from protein to the dreaded carbs and fats. They matter to your body, and excluding one such element or a big category of food (again, unless medically recommended) can be harmful, as you are not getting all the nutrition you require. The best solution is to always diet under medical supervision and avoid radical change to your eating habits barring an emergency.
Using drugs or alcohol to relax
There is nothing wrong with occasional drinking, however a bad habit is using this as the main way of relaxing. If you pour yourself a drink when you feel bad, it can become a habit and, as such, it can be difficult to then relax without a drink.
This becomes an unhealthy habit because you tend to drink a bit more or just find yourself on edge without it. The same happens with other types of drugs. It’s important to moderate it and not use it as the main go-to whenever you get stressed, or you run the risk of drinking too much.
